Results Call for Projects AI for Health

The Call for Projects AI for Health attracted twenty high-quality proposals from the four alliance partners. The jury announced five winning proposals. They cover AI research in the fields of prevention, diagnosis, care, treatment, and so called AI building blocks.

The Research award winners are:

• AI-driven prediction model of complications after corneal transplant surgery
  Proposers: Mitko Veta, Josien Pluim (TU/e), Gerko Vink (UU), Robert Wisse (UMCU).
  Subject: The project builds upon previous independent work by the three parties forming a new collaboration in corneal biomarker development. The project will bring together complementary expertise in surgical ophthalmology (UMCU), AI for medical image analysis (TU/e) and AI methodology and statistics (UU).
  Awarded amount: €40.000,-

• Towards the future of surgery: anatomical recognition in robot-assisted surgery
  Proposers: Jelle Ruurda (UMC Utrecht), Josien Pluim (TU/e), Maureen van Eijnatten (TU/e), Fred van Eeuwijk (WUR), Frank van der Stappen, Natasha Alechina (UU).
  Subject: The project leverages extensive experience and expertise of the partners in clinical practice and research experience in minimally invasive and upper-gastrointestinal surgery (UMCU), medical object recognition and AI in medical image analysis (TU/e), man-machine interfaces and autonomous intelligent systems (UU), and AI, applied statistics, and realisation of digital twins with a focus on applications in life and environmental sciences (WUR).
  Awarded amount: €40.000,-

• AI for Healthy Family Life
  Proposers: Henk Wensink, Marielle Timmer (WUR), Pieter van Gorp (TU/e), Catharine Evers (UU), Marielle Jambroes (UMC Utrecht).
  Subject: The project aims to overcome “intention-behaviour” gap in order to help patients to change their lifestyle within the social dimension of a family. The new partnership aims to leverage the complementary expertise in developing a social health data-platform (TU/e), capturing scientific validated data and knowledge on nutrition an health for personalised advice (WUR), psychology of human behaviour in self-regulatory abilities (UU), and assessing health of vulnerable groups and participatory action research (UMC Utrecht).
  Awarded amount: €40.000,- and is co-funded by the working group Preventive Health for €20.000,- .

• Establishing a Consortium to Apply for Horizon Grants about AI-aided Tools for Reviewing Large Amounts of Textual Data to Improve the Efficiency of Healthcare Provision
  Proposers: Rens van de Schoot (UU), Daniel Oberski (UMC Utrecht), Bedir Tekinerdogan (WUR), Chris Knighting (TU/e).
  Subject: The project aims to provide effective, explainable, and transparent AI-aided tools in the hands of intelligent decision makers in the healthcare domain. The partnership aims to establish a European consortium and write a grant proposal for the Horizon Europe funding scheme leveraging the expertise of the researchers in software engineering in AI and their solid contribution to Open Science.
  Awarded amount: €40.000,-

• A talisman for epilepsy: preparing an online transformer-based clinical research monitor
  Proposers: Willem Otte, Eric van Diessen (UMC Utrecht), Marijn Schraagen (UU), Pieter van Gorp (TU/e).
  Subject: The project aims to explore the boundaries of a potentially powerful AI-driven tool through the new partnership with complementary expertise in epilepsy research (UMC Utrecht), explainable AI to facilitate the implementation of Natural Language Processing (TU/e), and the recent transformer-based sequence processing and essential input in model fine-tuning (UU).
  Awarded amount: €20.000,-

Deadline for application was 1 November. With this call it is possible to facilitate and financially support collaborative initiatives of the four alliance institutions in the field of AI for Health.
