Health in your hands – Citizen-driven digital tools for engagement, equity, and impact

How can digital innovation truly empower people to live healthier lives? How can we ensure that technological advances in health aren’t just tools for the few, but pathways to equity, engagement, and real societal impact? In this session, “Health in Your Hands – Citizen-driven digital tools for engagement, equity, and impact,” we dive into a new wave of digital tools that put citizens at the center of their health journeys.

Programme

2.00 PM Welcome
By i4PH & EWUU AI-Hub

2.15 PM Well data: towards a Preventive European Health Data Space
WellData will provide the first European Data Space for Preventive Health, with the dual aim to enable citizen-centric interoperability between apps while also supporting secondary use of data for research and policy making. In his presentation Pieter will elaborate on WellData and how this could serve as an accelerator or booster to all other projects and how EWUU partners can benefit from it.

Presented by Pieter van Gorp (TU/e)

2.35 PM EQUAL-project: Enhancing Equity for Active Living through Digital Tools

Active lifestyle interventions such as cycling infrastructure and urban green spaces, are designed to create positive outcomes for citizens. However, not all groups benefit from them equally. To address this, it is crucial to engage and empower marginalized communities to participate in design and decision-making processes of such interventions. The EQUAL project explores how XR and AI-driven digital participatory tools, co-created with and for marginalized groups, can support them in actively shaping their neighborhoods and promoting active living. To do so, we adopt a trans- and interdisciplinary approach to ensure inclusive and meaningful participation.

3:10 PM AI-driven personalized and engaging nutrition education through immersive Virtual Reality

Non-transmissible diseases (NTDs) like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes are major global health challenges, often rooted in poor dietary habits. Traditional nutrition education methods struggle to inspire lasting change, but IVAN—the Immersive Virtual Alimentation and Nutrition Application—is transforming the field through virtual reality. IVAN offers an engaging, interactive environment where users learn about portion control, calorie density, and balanced eating with a digital dietitian. Its remote accessibility makes nutrition education more inclusive, particularly for underserved populations. Proven to improve portion control and self-efficacy, IVAN rivals traditional approaches and shows great promise in preventing diet-related diseases.

Presented by Alexander Klippel (WUR)

3:30 PM Panel Discussion

Following the presentations, we’ll bring our speakers together for an engaging panel discussion that dives deeper into the opportunities and challenges of citizen-driven digital health tools. Moderated with space for audience interaction, the panel will explore themes such as data interoperability, inclusivity in design, the ethical use of AI and XR, and how to ensure lasting behavioral change through technology.

4:00 PM Drinks & Networking

For whom?

This session is particularly relevant for mid-career researchers working on digital health, citizen engagement, and health equity, especially within the context of preventive health and technological innovation. It is also highly relevant for junior researchers, senior experts, and professionals from public and private sectors who are exploring the use of digital tools—such as VR, AI, and participatory platforms—to empower citizens and promote healthier lifestyles.
